The first TV show I remember vividly was the Magic Circle Club in 1965. I was in Year 1 at school, and my brother was in Kindergarten. The show, a precursor to "Adventure Island", was like a live musical pantomime and it played five nights a week - but very often, instead of seeing the Friday resolution episode, we had to go shopping after school with my Mum and grandmother!

Monday recess was for catching up with what had happened on the Friday, much as "Number 96" was discussed in the playground when I was at high school. (And in primary school, it was "Batman".)

Other very early memories: "The Adventures of Robin Hood" with Richard Green, and the very scary UK version of "The Invisible Man". And an afternoon kids' show with Bill the Koala, a lifelike hand puppet, who climbed back up a gum tree at the end of each show, while the hostess sang, "Bill's asleep, Bill's asleep, tra la la la la..., Bill's asleep."

I love Something in the Air. I know it's corny but that corny kooky depiction of life in a country town appeals. Also as I used to work in a radio station which used the same equipment - carts, reel to reel tape players, that desk (which looks like a Paul Kirk desk to me), I've even worn those headphones.

Also the other night I was watching SITH and I noticed one of the bit parts was played by a colleague of mine! I can't wait to see her to remind her of her starring role (she appeared in about 3 episodes).

Sons and Daughters - probably won't stay up for however... although the Pat the Rat's storyline does sound ...interesting.

the same Mike Preston that hosted In Melbourne Tonight, appeared in Homicide, Mad Max 2, and looking at imdb.com has been in a whole list of Aus and US productions but the most recent being in 1997, and a video game in 2002. Not sure of his current whereabouts though.

According to imdb.com, Zoe Bertram hasn't made any TV appearances since 2001, although in 1999 she appeared in an episode of Stingers with former Restless Years colleague Peter Phelps. Sad too to read last year about the passing of Jon Blake's mother who had been his most devoted carer since his horrific accident 20 years ago.

I first came to know Gwen Plumb from a TV panel show in the late 60s show she did with Noel Ferrier, called "Gwennie and Noel", and she also did return to radio broadcasting - for 2UE (I think it was) - in Sydney pre-"Young Doctors". She had quite a quaint, old-fashioned way of selecting and chatting to her open-line callers.

In her final years, I was fortunate to meet her at the annual writing seminars put together by literary agent, Selwa Anthony. (One of my dubious claims to fame - I shared an agent with the great Gwen Plumb, but only one of us has earned Selwa any commission!)

Gwen was as sharp as a tack to the end; we all admired how she could still be so feisty, so incredibly funny, and so insightful, and manage to do a 20 chat session - about anything! - with no preparation. She reminded me of my late grandmother, only older, feistier and funnier!

And yes, her autobiography, "Plumb Crazy", is hysterical!.

I have to be honest and say I didn't know a lot about Gwen Plumb's career pre-Young Doctors, such as her radio and theatre background. I guess that happens in showbiz, you can work in the theatre all your life but nobody knows who you are until you're on the telly. But as I know now she was quite a talented and versatile performer
